Mental Health Awareness Week 18th – 24th May 2020

Ways of getting involved in Mental Health Awareness Week.

Today marks the first day of Mental Health Awareness Week, and as you know the Ajuda team are very passionate about raising awareness of mental health and supporting people to become more knowledgeable in supporting others.

A large portion of our work at the Cardiff office is focussed around not only providing award-winning Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid courses, but also organising successful and popular live events in Cardiff which would ordinarily welcome thousands of people.

Due to obvious circumstances, we have been unable to provide our training and physical events this year, but there are plenty of other ways of getting involved in Mental Health Awareness Week.

Mental Health & Wellbeing Show Online

In just a few hours the first day of our new virtual event, Mental Health and Wellbeing Online, is about to begin – with so much on offer across the week from Monday 18th to Thursday 21st.

From 10am – 12pm on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th May we will be running FREE online conference sessions featuring a range of speakers, with a partner charity selected every day.

On Thursday 21st, we will be running a six-hour conference from 9am – 3pm with a fantastic line-up of mental health experts for just £12 per ticket! (A percentage of all ticket sales will be donated to our three featured charities from earlier in the week)

International Nurses Day 2020

May 12th is International Day of the Nurse and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, Ajuda joins hundreds of organisations worldwide to highlight the importance of nurses in the healthcare continuum and say a massive thank you for all the work they do on a day to day basis.

Historically, as well as today, nurses are at the forefront of fighting epidemics and pandemics –  providing high quality and respectful treatment and care. They are often the first and sometimes the only health professional that people see and the quality of their initial assessment, care and treatment is vital.

We hope that as many people as possible from around the world will take part in this global moment of reflection by sharing their stories, photos and tributes on social media using the hashtag #RememberHealthHeroes. Tonight at 20.30 people all around the world will world will light a candle or even use the light on their mobile phones, to show respect for the health workers lost to this pandemic.

Kris Martyn Sings For Your Supper

The Ajuda Team are Raising Money for Charity During Covid-19!

In the past month, the entire world has turned upside down, and the effects of Coronavirus have hit every single part of our society in a huge way. Every day on the news we hear more about different businesses and organisations that are struggling to cope under the strain of coronavirus – but one sector which has been hit particularly hard during these times is the charity sector.

With public gatherings banned, and many people worried about their personal finances – charities have seen a monumental drop in donations and are struggling to keep afloat during this difficult time.

The Ajuda Team are constantly dedicated to supporting charities throughout our work and events, and this time is no different! We are organising a range of activities over the next few months to support both local and national charities, here’s what we have been up to recently!

Kris Sings in the Street to Support Cardiff Foodbanks

Our newest member of the Ajuda Team, Kris Martyn, is using his musical talents to raise money for foodbanks across the Cardiff area while keeping his neighbours and Facebook fans entertained too!

Kris is an admin angel by day, professional singer by night, and puts on an amazing performance in clubs and bars across South Wales (when they are open!)

Foodbanks across Cardiff have seen a huge rise in demand due to the uncertainty of COVID-19, and they are in desperate need for more donations.

He recently raised £220 during his last performance and is planning on raising even more THIS WEEKEND by doing a live performance from his home. All of the money raised is put towards a large shopping trip and donated to the central distribution centre for all of the Cardiff foodbanks.

You can watch the live link from 2pm on Sunday 26th April on Facebook here.

You can donate to the foodbanks via this link here

Mental Health Awareness Virtual Conference to be held in aid of local charities!

The Ajuda events team are also organising a virtual mental health conference which will take place over the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week (18th – 21st May 2020) and will be donating ticket proceeds to three local charities doing some fantastic work.

From 10am – 12pm on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th May we will be running FREE online conference sessions featuring a range of speakers, with a partner charity selected every day. Our chosen charities are Bullies Out, 2 Wish Upon a Star and Caerau Men’s Shed.

On Thursday 21st, we will be running a six-hour conference from 9am – 3pm with a fantastic line-up of mental health experts for just £10 per ticket! (A percentage of all ticket sales will be donated to our three featured charities from earlier in the week)

Learn more about the whole week of online events here.

If you are a local charity that is looking for support, please do get in touch with us and we will always see what we can do to support you. We do have limited opportunities but always try to support a variety of charities over the course of the year, so please let us know about your great work!

International Women’s Day – #EachForEqual

Happy International Women’s day to all of our customers and readers – we hope you have the opportunity to share this day with the wonderful women in your life.

This year’s International Women’s Day Theme is #EachforEqual, promoting equality among every single walk of life.

Their official website reads:

“An equal world is an enabled world.

Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.

We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.

Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.

Let’s all be #EachforEqual.”

Equality is such an important and crucial virtue we must all strive for in our world to ensure everyone has the opportunities they deserve.

Our director Dawn, is a prime example of someone who always grasps every opportunity she discovers and has achieved a fantastic amount in the past few years, and over her entire career. Some highlights of recent successes are highlighted here.

Dawn Evans launches her First Aid adventure series of books with AJ and Uda at the Safari Park (March 2020)

Dawn has become an author!

Dawn has recently published the first book in her exciting new Children’s Book Series – AJ and Uda’s First Aid Adventures!

Dawn decided the create the AJ and Uda book series to introduce first aid to young children in a fun and easy-to-understand way – and the first book in the series has proven to be hugely popular!

The series follows the adventures of two young siblings, AJ and Uda, as they travel around the country and find themselves using their life-saving first aid skills wherever they go. In each book in the series, AJ and Uda will discover a casualty and will need to use a different life-saving skill to help the person affected.

Reached the Mount Toubkal Summit

The ABF Soldiers’ Charity is one very close to Dawn’s heart, and she regularly fundraises for them in a variety of different ways including her events. In September 2019, Dawn took on another big challenge for ABF Soldiers’ charity – climbing Mount Toubkal in Morocco.

Standing at 4,167m, Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and the tallest mountain in North Africa.

Dawn took on the challenge accompanied by her husband, Ianto, who both served in the army for a combined total of 45 years. Together they smashed the challenge, and also raised an amazing £4,132.33 for the charity.

Dawn launches Mental Health & Wellbeing Show

To highlight the importance of the mental health and to increase the awareness about this topic we created a separate full-day event. Mental Health & Wellbeing Show is taking place on 21st of May 2020 in Cardiff City Stadium. This is the show dedicated to mental health and aiming to promote positive mental health through open conversation, promoting awareness and sharing real-life experiences. Our seminar speakers focus on topics such as coping with mental illness, ways to promote positive mental health, and how to support people around you who are suffering with ill mental health.

Find out more about the event on our website: https://www.mhwshow.co.uk/

The Ajuda team are so very proud of all of Dawn’s achievements, and can’t wait to see what she is set to achieve in 2020, which will no doubt be amazing as always!

AJ and Uda Book Series Officially Launched for World Book Day

The team at Ajuda are very pleased and excited to announce that the official book launch party for the AJ and Uda’s First Aid Adventures book series just in time for World Book Day! AJ and Uda at the Safari Park is now available to order on amazon here.

The launch took place at Cardiff’s Virgin Money Lounge last night, with author Dawn Evans doing a book signing for our lucky guests along with a reading from inside the book.

The AJ and Uda book series was created by our director Dawn to address the need of better first aid education for young children. Although there are plans to introduce First Aid training to the school curriculum, this has yet to be confirmed, and is a very crucial skill for anybody to have at the earliest age possible.

In the first book of the series, the young first-aiders teach our readers about the Recovery Position.

The 10-part book series features different key topics which are found on the Emergency First Aid at Work Syllabus, including choking, anaphylactic shock, head injuries and more.

Work is already well underway for the second book of the series which will focus on epileptic seizures, and Dawn can’t wait to educate as many people as possible to save lives.

Dawn said; “I am so pleased to be introducing these exciting new books into schools and on children’s bookshelves across the county. Basic first aid is such an important skill for everyone to have, as you never know when you will need to save a life.

I hope my books will help educate children on these crucial skills and give them a better understanding of what they can do in emergency situations.”

Dawn’s second book will be published very soon, keep checking back on our social media pages and blogs for more information!

3 Reasons why it’s important to renew your training qualifications

Qualification renewal is crucial, whether it is for first aid, fire safety, or food hygiene, not only to keep your qualifications up to date but your knowledge too. You know how to get a certificate, but did you know it’s important to keep it current?

Why is it important to renew?

1. The guidelines and procedures can change

Each year, new medical advancements are made, guidelines are revisited and procedures can be updated or amended. To stay on top of all changes, regular training renewal is vital. You don’t want to perform a previous version of a procedure if there is a newer, more effective version available, especially when it comes to life-saving procedures

2. To continually refresh skills and knowledge

Even if only a few details have changed since you last did a training course, if you’re not performing first aid and CPR on a regular basis you’re likely to start to forget little things.

Keep your skills and knowledge refreshed and stay in practice by renewing within the recommended three-year time frame for first aid or every 12 months for the CPR component.

3. Stay confident

It’s one thing to know the techniques, but it’s another to have the confidence to apply them when the time comes. Regular training ensures that you will always have the confidence (along with those life-saving skills) to act quickly and effectively when faced with a potentially stressful medical situation.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS!

Image

We celebrated 10 years of Ajuda!

A very special milestone was hit in 2019, too, with Ajuda celebrating a whole 10 years in business! In this past decade we have trained over 60,000 people, developed an extensive catalogue of popular courses, and worked with some fantastic people and organisations over the years.

To celebrate, Ajuda had a 10 year party at the Copthorne Hotel in Cardiff which included a fantastic meal, entertainment and a charity auction.

The chosen charity for the event was the ABF Soldiers’ Charity, a charity that our director Dawn supports regularly.

We hope that the next 10 years will bring us just as much fun!

Talking Mental Health National Conference will return in 2020

The first Talking Mental Health Conference in Wales was so successful that will be staged for a second year, organiser Dawn Evans has revealed.

The event held at Cardiff City Stadium to coincide with World Mental Health Day on October 10 was sponsored by Remploy and opened by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Daniel De’Ath.

Among the 120 attendees were Jack Sergeant Alyn & Deeside AM and Dr Henk Parmentier, Vice President for Europe at the World Federation for Mental Health.

Following the death of his father Carl, suicide prevention campaigner Mr Sergeant has launched an initiative called The 84, named after the 84 men who take their own lives each week in the UK.

Jack said: “The more we can talk about mental health, the more we can help people get through their days.”

There were 30 exhibitors including Mind Cymru and Action For Children, and the line-up of speakers included former Bristol, Wigan Athletic, and Wales footballer David Cotterill, who talked about the pressures of international football and their effect on mental health, and June Jones, the Campaign and Strategy Lead for Time To Change Wales, which aims to end the stigma associated with having a mental health issue.

Peter Davies, Regional Director, Wales, for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, also talked about the mental health support it provides to soldiers, veterans, and their families, and Rachel Kingsbury, a mental health first aid trainer with the Ajuda Training Academy, spoke about the impact of anxiety and depression.

Dawn, the CEO of Ajuda, a multi-award-winning specialist mental health and vocational training company based in Cardiff, said: “We offer groundbreaking mental health first aid training to our clients and we see how important talking about this issue is for so many people in workplaces across Wales.

“So, we decided to bring people together to talk about the subject, to share insights, create strong relationships, and share best practice. We hope our conference will help to end the stigma about discussing mental health.

“The event had such a warm reception that we felt we must host the conference again next year in Cardiff on October 8.”

Dawn is also the driving force behind the Mental Health & Wellbeing Show which will be coming to Cardiff on May 21, 2020. You can book tickets here.

There will be 60 exhibitors and 20 seminars all on topics related to mental health and wellbeing.

Attendance is free with seminars starting at £10 and the show sponsorship partner will be Remploy.

One in four adults, along with one in ten children, will have a mental health issue.

These conditions can profoundly affect millions of lives, affecting the capability of people to make it through the day, sustain relationships, and maintain work.

The stigma attached to mental health issues can make it more difficult for those affected to pursue help.

We can make a difference and contribution by raising awareness. Talking Mental Health is a national conference to help people understand and recognise poor mental health and to make a difference.

Keynote speakers talked about their own personal journeys with mental health conditions, sharing their recovery stories. A range of companies and services attended on the day, showing how they support people with a mental health condition.

The event was a day of inspiration, motivation, learning, networking, sharing and positivity around mental health.

Do you have a mental health lead in your school?

WHY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

Mental illnesses often start in adolescence or early adulthood and it is important to detect problems early to ensure the young person is properly treated and supported. The YMHFA (Wales) course teaches adults who have frequent contact with adolescents, such as parents, guardians, school staff, sport coaches and youth workers, how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

The Government Green Paper ‘Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision’ plans for every school and college to have a designated lead in mental health by 2025. The designated Youth Mental Health First Aider will be a trained member of staff who is responsible for the school’s approach to mental health.

This course is designed to meet this requirement by providing you with a clear understanding of the role of the school mental health lead. This step-by-step course will take you through essential skills needed to develop a multidisciplinary, whole systems approach through effective practice procedures to ensure the improvement of mental health and wellbeing in your school.

COURSE CONTENT & AIMS:
